We need to be working together in large numbers, as part of a coordinated effort. That’s the only way we’re really going to get rapid, peaceful progress.
The whole is always greater than the sum of its parts.
I mean, don’t get me wrong. Doing good by yourself or in a small group is still much better than not doing any good at all.
But in a world with billions of people in it, we need to be working together in large numbers, as part of a coordinated effort. That’s the only way we’re really going to get rapid, peaceful progress.
There are several obstacles, I think.
One is simply that folks tend not to appreciate just how many people need to be working together to affect change in a world with 7.5 billion people living in it.
Another is pride. Some people just don’t want to be part of something bigger than themselves, unless they get to run the show.
A third obstacle is this mess of ideological differences that has torn us apart, and made many of us unwilling to work together with others, unless they believe the same things we do.
We’re going to have to overcome those obstacles.
The best way, I think, is to be radically inclusive, and to have a concrete, realistic plan of action, that people can see will actually work.
The good news is we already have all the raw ingredients we need.
There are tons of people concerned about how things are going. There are tons of people who are willing to work for change, and be part of something bigger than themselves, if they can be convinced that change is actually possible.
There are tons of people already out there, working for change.
We don’t have to whip people up into a frenzy. What we have to do is get these thousands of organizations and billions of people who are raring to go to work together.
A bunch of small, uncoordinated efforts will barely make a ripple. But one big, coordinated effort can make a huge splash.
Getting people to work together is a tough task. But the only way to make it happen is to confront that challenge head on.
It needs to be our primary focus. Not these small efforts that will barely make a ripple. Not alienating a bunch of people by turning them into enemies.
What we need is massive coordination, with a strong plan.
