Step 1: We Need to Get in the Right Frame of Mind

We need to deal with the apathy, cynicism, scapegoating, and despair that results from living in this kind of environment for so long.

We live in a society that’s freakishly good at pushing our buttons.

Our politics are bitter and gridlocked. The economy is unpredictable and stacked against ordinary people. The media intentionally freaks us out for their own gain. So do countless other organizations, trying to advance their agendas by exploiting our emotions.

We work hard, running around, trying to fulfill all our obligations, trying to deal with everything that needs to be dealt with. We feel like things are changing too fast. We feel like we’re powerless to make things better. We worry things won’t ever get better.

This is not the way it’s supposed to be!

Our ancestors founded civilizations so we could avoid the stresses and dangers of trying to survive in nature—not so we’d be forced to spend all day in the same exhausting, terrified, fight-or-flight state of threatened animals.

We need to deal with the emotional consequences of being forced to live like this, so we aren’t led into unwise, unproductive, kneejerk reactions.

We need to deal with the apathy, cynicism, scapegoating, and despair that results from living in this kind of environment for so long.

We need to recognize that all of this is there by design, in how we’ve set up our society—and that it’s this system, and not some convenient scapegoat, that’s the source of the problem.

We need to reclaim our open-mindedness, our healthy sense of humility, and above all our hope from all the organizations out there that just want us to vote for them, buy their stuff, or believe they’re the greatest thing since sliced bread.

We’ve got to take care of this first—or even our most noble intentions to make the world a better place are going to get off on the wrong foot.

There are a lot of things going on out there that we should be concerned about. But I guarantee it’s the folks who keep their cool, who are going to best equipped to dealing productively with those problems.
